Scrapbook de la Emma & Gay Pirates sing song with Cosmo Jarvis

You may remember I ran a competition last month to win a vintage voucher for my online store. An easily forgettable side of the competition was the Mystery Prize which I can now reveal... because I finally drew it tonight! It's just a little sketch for the winner EMMA HACKETT who, as it turns out, has a delightful blog herself; Scrapbook de la Emma. The sketch also features Claire of Stolen from Grandma and Sophie of Owl vs Dove, who kindly helped me spread the word about my competition.

Now here's a little story to cap off tonight's post. I was thoroughly enjoying my drive home from Fremantle tonight with good tunes on the radio and a box of perfectly salted chippies on the passenger seat (the best passenger!). I was especially happy when Cosmo Jarvis's song 'Gay Pirates' came on the radio. Ok ok the title does suggest a rather awful and offensive song would follow, and yet, it is possibly the most perfect and honest title for what is certainly a product of extensive thought and talent. I am mad for pirate ditties; The Decemberists 'The Mariner's Revenge Song' is an all time favourite.

I cant say how happy I was to hear a pirate melody that carries such weight in its lyrics. It is the story of a love between two men at sea and the torment they endure from their fellow shipmates. It is uplifting melody while being remarkably moving, commenting on the prejudice and intolerance that gay couples still encounter. It's just such a well written and lovable song, people will be dancing to this tune without even realising it's meaning. Its a modern day 'Afternoon Delight', if a little more significant.

The moral of the story; I was singing Gay Pirates at the top of my lungs as I pulled up to turn right onto Bruce Street in Nedlands. My thoughts were deeply entrenched in the song and maintaining my notes at the maximum volume possible that I didn't realise I was opposite Pata Negra tapas restaurant, and my window was wound down. I like to think that I treated the diners to an amazing vocal delicacy, but it is more likely they would have believed me to be bellowing madly at the dashboard. Perhaps a little more embarrassing than when I am (regularly) caught singing enthusiastically by my neighbouring traffic light car, but at least then I am mute. Ah well, I rolled up the window and kept on singing.

Yo ho Sebastion,
Let's go far away,
Somewhere where the captain wont be mad.
Yo ho Sebastion
I want to love you good
We deserve much better than we've had.

An illustration and oil painting I did quite some time ago. They were intended for an album cover for the now disbanded TV nation. Just some of the artwork I have unearthed recently in a bout of mad home organisation.

Spare time strangeness

Rather bored and restless the other night, I entertained myself by ballet dancing enthusiastically around the house while singing opera. Now, I have been taking ballet classes so I can confirm that the dance moves I was attempting were legitimate, but the same cannot be said for the opera as I know nothing about this music. Safe to assume then that I was just throwing myself down the corridor while wailing at the top of my lungs. After a short burst of this even I was weirded out so I decided to settled down and draw a picture instead. This picture illustrates that it's really hard to pirouette in a high waisted acid wash skirt.

Facebook Comp Winner: Alexandria Wilson

In early May I drew the winner of The Ginger Fox Facebook fan competition; the prize, a $100 gift voucher for vintage delights in our online store. With the help of my darling assistant Indy, the winner was picked;
Alexandria Wilson
Now due to some restrictions in the Facebook business pages, I have been unable to contact the winner! So this is my shout out to little Alex - you need to email me at ginger.fox@hotmail.com to claim your prize, the vintage is a waiting darlin.

Chills and style thrills at UWA

You can't always have a giant SLR camera handy now can you? Well lucky I have my new iPhone and twitter app. Yep I am now ultra-super-massively connected it boggles the mind. My phone is now the portal to everyone I have ever met, the master of my events, the answer to all questions and grand keeper of my secrets. In such a short period of time I have become entirely dependant on this little device. Now given my history with anything electrical, me thinks this will not end well... But hey, live in the now I say, and boy is it fun to tweet Perth style.
It was a wonderfully warm, sun drenched day today and people really seemed to be enjoying laying about on the grass and relaxing in a manner that only students can. To bad the sun didn't reach me at my stall; instead I had deep shade, concrete and an icy wind wiping through the UWA corridors. I spent the day either scrambling for vintage jumpers to use as blankets or choreographing my own version of Zumba fitness (mine has jumping jacks ehh ehh). Curse you glorious, carefree children of the sun, curse you.

Indy Tails: To kill two birds with one dog.

True story...

Now, despite the name of this post (which is perhaps a tad over-saturated with plays on words and puns), no birds were harmed in the making of this comic strip. They were a little frazzled, but thankfully Indy has only soft, little, fuzzy paws and not much weight behind him so he would have only winded poor Cody and Wendel. Scary none the less!

I am happy to report that since this incident, there has been no more dog on bird contact even when I let them out of the cage to fly around. Indy is always watchful and intrigued but he appears to have gotten a close enough look last time, and now he is happy to let them be. Thus the harmony of my little friends is restored.

Clothing rack from HELL!

I have now had two serious incidents with a particular one of my clothing racks which leads me to believe that this contraption is much more than it appears to be. It pretends to be an innocuous, run of the mill garment rack comprised of various metal rods welded and slotted together, but beneath this chrome exterior resides a heart of pure darkness. Meet SATAN'S CLOTHING RACK!

Da Da DAAAAAAAAAAAAAAUUM

Here is me innocently pondering whether my rack needs to be raised (quite a clever little rack, it has 3 height levels)

Though probably not a smart idea to attempt a raise when the rack is fully loaded.

The silver beast took swift revenge slicing a significant rectangular chunk out of my right index finger.

Flash forward to another, up to this point, delightful day. My racks act as a trolley to transport my gear to my jolly blue trailer, and I was packed up and ready to depart.

With a small push on the side post, the top rail dislodges and sling shots into my face.

I then perform the little dance I like to call 'Whoosh of the Windmill Arms'

Arm flailing inevitably proving useless, I land smack on my bum and sit dazed for a few minutes. This whole episode proving hilarious to the many skater boys and girls who turned up to the Leederville skate park for a state skating competition directly behind my stall. Though I do believe I turned out to be a highlight in the half time entertainment.
Damn you Satan's rack!

In lieu of a camera in Leederville

I had the ultimate bad timing on the weekend. I left the SLR camera at home opting for the less cumbersome point and snap canon only to get to market, fire it up and see the sad little red flashing battery icon. Ah well I thought, never mind, whats one week of missed photos huh... I failed to take into consideration that perhaps a committee of style had been formed, or a facebook group for wicked threads or even tweets about an impromptu gathering of Perth's fashionistas. Some form of planning must have been involved because I was blown away by just how good everyone look. I saw incredible brogue shoes, tailored white linen singlet shirts (so summer), a sculptured castle ring, bold haircuts and vibrant lippie. Of all days to not have a camera siiiiiigh. I briefly toyed with the notion of taking blurry pixelated camera phone pics but in the end I went with inconspicuously sketching some of the lovely ladies when they weren't looking.Sly aint I haha

To provide a little explanation for my scrawling; lovely lady 1 was wearing a gorgeous coral vintage dress with a darling floral pattern. I just lovely how she teamed it with all white accessories and shoes.
Lovely lady 2 was rocking an oh so awesome acid wash skirt with exposed zip. She used one of my favourite tricks and pined a bow to the waist band with a great gold & black button/brooch at its centre.
Lovely lady 3 always looks lovely and is probably my number one Ginger Fox regular. She wore an oversized cotton sleeveless blouse covering her denim cut offs. Heeled boots, heart shaped bag, bangles galore, huge rings and to cap it all off hot pink lipstick.

Lovely Chook 1 went for the naturalist look which I think was a really smart choice as the grey tones from the buildings really made his feathers pop.

P.s. If you recognise yourself, make my day and leave a comment. Im particulary looking forward to hearing from monster chicken :)

I curse you technology

Align Center
So that pretty much sums up my current predicament. Unfortunately there was more wrong with the computer than first anticipated, of course, so it will be a number of weeks until it is in working order again. This poses a problem as Troy and I have dedicated countless hours filling that laptop up with every photo, program and document essential to our respective lives without (shoot me now) backing anything up. I can now hear you all shaking your heads and muttering 'well you should have backed it up now shouldn't you tsk tsk'. Well that's all good and well if your external hard drive you purchase for that express purpose doesn't die after only a week, taking with it tonnes of files you will never get back and hence causing irrevocable damage to your faith in backup systems. GAAAAAH
*calming breath*
On a happier note, all my dear friends have come to our aid with loaner computers so the style pics should keep on coming. Yay for friends, boo technology

The Ginger Fox and the attack of the Jaz

It seems like the vast majority of my snaps are from Leederville nowadays. Actually, it almost feels as if I never leave the place now that I've moved my Saturday stall to the Oxford Street Markets. Who's complaining though, the girls sure look pretty in Leedy. Weirdly though, they all appear to be named Jasmine???

Jaz with quite the creation, her spotted bag re-purposed from an old dress by her mum awww.

Jasmine fellow vintage stall maiden

Rachel looking simply sweet

Jasmine channeling rock chick

Jasmin... I mean Steph

Liz another Perth vintage guru

As you may have noticed, I failed to chase down any styling boys this weekend and so in lieu of the normal lovely lad pics I have included my thoughts this summers biggest male fashion trend. All hail the denim cut-offs. Half the reason I love them so much is they conjure up images of dear Tobias and bring much needed attention to the never-nude affliction (if you don't know what I'm taking about you must stop what your doing right now and go hire the Arrested Development box set..off you go, I'm not joking!) .

Thankfully however, the Perth boys do wear them slightly longer than Mr Fünke.

The Ginger Fox: old photos and old fashion faux pas

Thanks to awesome Ami, a lovely customer who took some style photos for me back in my woeful broken camera period, I have a couple of little fashion gems to share with you. Best wishes for a banging weekend to all those going to Southbound! I will be there (yay Moby and just about everything else on this very very solid lineup) keeping and eye out for the unique and inspired festival attire. Have fun kids :)

As a side note, after perusing my favourite fashion rags I have noticed a few pushing the good ole bell bottom jeans. This rather worried me as I had my time in bell bottoms and I have to say as a rather shapeless girl, I looked like a pink dolphin lost a battle with denim. I don't recommend this trend for anyone that has, like me, a figure like a plank of wood. If you are blessed with a waist (i was not haha) and child bearing hips (as my damn lucky housemate dubs hers) then go nuts cause this look is for you.

The Ginger Fox loves Megan Isabella illustrations

I have been keeping a close eye on my letter box of late, eagerly awaiting my own personal illustrations from local Perth illustrator, Megan Isabella. Miss Megan creates a myriad of vintage inspired paper doll drawings with swirly hair, rosy cheeks and toddler like cuteness. Earlier this year she started the Paper Doll Project where she created these darling pieces of art from photos submitted by real people. So quick as a whistle I sent my pics off and low and behold, two absolutely adorable paper people arrive in the mail. Not bad I say :)

and here are the original photos.
